Architects, as we most know, are more than designers. One can say that architects are called the ‘connector’ of a project in architecture: In the architect(ure) world, they must work with clients on an intensive exploration of the clients’ needs and wants. Architects must be able to set a viable and realistic budget, and monitor the budget of their projects; They guide the clients through the town planning process, obtain competitive quotes for the work, manage consultants like surveyors and engineers, and architects must administer the construction of the project. In formal education of architecture, institutes have a goal to educate their students to achieve on comprehending and applying the targets above (they need to ensure that their graduates will succeed as architects not only academically but also in working environment). Architects are required to be professional, therefore a qualification is important solely to make sure that those architecture graduates are acknowledged as a professional working architects contributing to society.

The UIA (Union Internationale Architectes) is an organization that has the goal to unite the architects of the world without regard to nationality, race, religion, or architectural doctrine, and to federate their national organisations. The organisation has member sections located in five regions: Africa, the Americas, Asia and Oceania, Western Europe, and Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Each region contains several member sections such as RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), RAIA (Royal Institute of Australian Architects), IAI (Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia), and AIA (American Institute of Architects). The organisation covers an international criteria of Architecture education and practices which have been mentioned in the above paragraph and also of which those mentioned member sections carry out in their designated areas.

The following tables shows a comparison of the member sections of Indonesia’s, Australia’s, USA’s, and UK’s educational system on architecture and what requirements they need to become a part of the country’s Architect Institute / member section as well as institutes/schools that offer architecture courses.

In conclusion, one can notice that each of the four countries have their own criteria which satisfy the UIA’s international criteria for architecture education and practices. One can also notice that they also have some similar requirements and some different requirements and steps to become a registered architect in each specified country. One can assume that this happens in other countries which are part of the UIA’s member sections.
