Sustainable Living on Urban Design Project for a Better Future

Susan Maxman has suggested that “sustainable architecture isn’t a prescription. Its an approach, an attitude. It shouldn’t really even have a label. It should just be architecture” .[i] It describes environmentally design techniques in architecture. The purpose of this research is to analyze the concept of eco city or eco building, based on sustainable living. “ Sentul City,city of Ennovation, is located in Bogor, Indonesia and was launched with four pillars concept. One of those pillars is eco city, city development to ensure harmony based on the concept of Green Property in Kawasan Argenia Sentul City. The percentage of green area is 65%. Another green development is Gujarat International Finance Tech-City or GIFT, under-construction in Gujarat, India. The main purpose of this project is to provide high quality physical infrastructure such as electricity, utility systems, and broadband, so that finance and tech firms can relocate their operations there from other cities, such as Mumbai, etc. By identifying those projects, it will help for analyze the eco-city concept to define sustainable urbanism green cities.

Sentul City started to be developed in 1993 covering with 3.100 hectares. It is well-known as the largest and exclusive Urban Development Project in the South Jakarta. It won an award from the Indonesian Property & Bank Award 2010 as the Most Favorite Cluster with Green Wall Implementation & Eco Friendly Development [ii]. Developing this eco-city project, PT Sentul City Tbk (BKSL) and Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) created a cooperation to make the area in Sentul City into eco-friendly urban areas or ‘Eco City’. A good plan has been released, then BKSL and IPB will implement the greenery, ecological buildings and performance methods for environmental management. They will use approximately 2.000 hectares of the area to build for integrated residential areas. Herry Suhardiyanto, the Rector of IPB, regards this cooperation as a form of corporate responsibility for businesses to address the severity of the impact in global warming [iii].

The second project is Gujarat International Finance Tech-City or GIFT which is under-construction as a world-class city in the Indian state of Gujarat. It will occupy a green field site of more than 500 acres in the developing state of Gujarat. It becomes the world’s largest international financial services center and IT hub when it is completed in 2017. GIFT will function as an environmentally friendly eco-city, incorporating renewable energy sources like solar power, energy-efficient intelligent buildings, and district cooling. The site is located on the bank of river Sabarmati is about 12 kilometres from Ahmedabad International Airport [iv]. The development of GIFT offers a significant opportunity to give sustanaible living in various fields and the important part is an environmental protection. The purpose of the design is used for the global finance services industry which control the residential activity along with other social infrastructure provision to keep the city alive and active .

Comparing to the Sentul City and GIFT,India, both of them have same goal to reach sustainable living for urban design project. GIFT provides more than 500 acres for green space and Sentul City has built more than 50% of 3.100 hectares for green space. Sentul City has new systems, such as green map and using green wall and roof for construction. The landmark project of GIFT is reaching the target of financial growth and improvement of high technology in several sectors. Sentul City has a target to be a role model developer building integrated and reaching Eco-Friendly city by using local human resources, so it will decrease the cost of building development.

An Architect ‘s Contribution on Flood in Brisbane, March 2011

There were many printed and electronic medias which have published this topic as a headline news on their media. Who’s expect that Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland which getting flood on March 2011? No one expected that they trapped in flood. Because of this natural disaster, people in Brisbane had a lot of problem to save their life and they didn’t get the idea how to solve it. This is an interesting topic to discuss it more and more.

Brisbane has getting recovery after more than a month after flooding. The floods started in late December and peaked in mid-January. There were a lot of victims at there approximately 22 people has been killed, left a lot of homeless, destroyed countless buildings, and damaged public facilities. It caused by Cyclone Yasi, a tropical storm that hit Queensland’s northern coast on February 3.

The geometry association has said that heavy rain will be fallen between August and January, and it still continuous rain in December, and by the end, it gives the result about overflowing rivers through the state. Lockyer River, as the main river who have a capability to accommodate the water, has overflooded and it affected Brisbane on high level flooding.

Causing largely by a La Niña effect, Queensland has predicted as the wettest one which got flood in massive amount..

The floods has affected on infrastructures such as electrical, economy has dropped down, and leaving hundreds of vehicles. The transportation couldn’t be used and it is closed started from January 10 until February 22. The highways were totally off on used, and many roads were reduced to single lines.

During this case, there are a lot of volunteer who response to help Bribane get the spirit back.

There were many architects, engineering, and construction supplier has contributed on this disaster. The questions is how can they maintain all this project in short time and give the best result for citizens ?

A lot of organizations such as the Australian Institute of Architects and Emergency Architects Australia (EAA) sent volunteers into the affected areas. They help those people who are not rich and confused how to continue their life. The company supplier also participated by providing bobcats and trucks to accommodate the victims.

They started to collect the funding for Recovery and they have coordinated with local governments and federal. They have announced that they have collected $400 million from local institutions.

The funding will be used for rebuilding Queensland, and few parts in Australia. They need volunteer engineering, architects who qualified to handle this project. They will re-build the house as the Queensland board for urban places that Government has agreed this project on the architect plans. This is the basic step to rebuild Queensland.

Basically, it started from little to concern on reconstruction and it will continous to other step if the Queensland board has finished.

We can see that as an architect, we can not just to prioritize to learning a lot of profits. We have to pay attention on our environmental issues and find the solution how to solve it. We need to contribute to help each other and also how to give the best effort for participating on our environment. That is the purpose that we have to fight for as an architect.

What is Sustainable Architecture ? 

Why is it very important for our future development ?

There are two questions that can be answer by us as a future architect to give best contribution for our environment. It is better to know what is sustainable architecture and the purpose itself, so we can know a lot of information about this project and the ideas how to make it real.

Sustainable architecture is based on our creativity how to make a building on healthy environment. The purpose of this construction is to make it the function of building on energy and resource efficiency ,such as :

  • minimising non-renewable resource consumption
  • enhancing the natural environment

Sustainable building also strive for another quality such as economic,politic,and environmental performance. It will gives impact of companies who handle resources and re-arrange of their management to contribute about saving resources, reducing a lot of energy consumption (energy conservation), and improving the environment quality itself.

There is life cycle between human and environment and sustainable building as a mediator between them gives solution to take the environment quality by increasing the function of the bulding but its still eco friendly.

You can see there are a lot of developer who selling their projects and the market of housing is increased sharply but the answer is do they built the project meets the green criteria? You can see on Indonesia property that a lot of projects has built the upcoming project in eco city concept. It means that they want to give revolutionary on the concept design and hope it will help to bring better environment.

The OECD project has identified five objectives for sustainable buildings:

  • Resource Efficiency, the way to safe more resources.
  • Energy Efficiency (including Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction and carbon foot print)
  • Pollution (including Indoor Air Quality and Noise Abatement), applying system to reduce pollution by planting a lot of greeneries.

Based on that criteria, we can try to give best efforts for giving a better life for our environment, such as :

  1. Decrease fuel consumption by do not often use vehicles
  2. Design the building by minimize the cost and using non renewable material for construction because it can’t be recycled on short time.
  3. Learning from local traditions about material for giving better construction techniques.

If the criteria on above have been fulfilled, we try our building as a “green “one. This can be fulfilled if our building has meet on sustainable building criteria.

A green building is good concept for giving better health. The criteria to fulfill this one is same as the sustainable but we have to focus on the major issue which is cost of the building, because it will spend a lot of money, starting from developing and maintaning. Making green building is not easy as we thought.

Considering to the large budget for construction, we need to provide commitment to better process, keeping good relation on teamwork, and getting a lot of information on how these are best applied. That’s the basic that architect can do for creating sustainable building.





What is Your Image of Architecture in The Future ?

What kind of architectural design for the future?

Urban development is increasingly so massive. Our world makes the architects start to think when they are going to creating buildings that overcome with the limitations of space, energy resources, limited food and clean water,and also few place which provide comfortable rest and recreation. There are nine progessive building design about the future of architecture, but I want to give the information just four designs of them, because im afraid when I spend a lot of space to explain all information more deeply. It is so hard to get a lot of information, because in many sources, they just give general information of that.

Related to eco-efficient and eco-effectiveness, An architect, Vincent Vallebaut has made a great design for our sustainability.

  1. Dragonfly Vertical Farm for Future New York

Vicent designer Vallebaut create extraordinary designs to synergize the resources of food, shelter, and energy sources in the future. Dragonfly (dragonfly) is the concept of urban agriculture and dragonfly wing design to provide a source of local fresh food in an urban environment. The facilities are research labs, housing, and community areas and its located and separated between orchards, farms, and production rooms. Plant and animal farming is used to maintain soil and nutrient levels, and also the important one is reusing of biowaste. Dragonfly is made from steel as the main material.

Solar energy can be accepted from the space of that building. In the summer, it makes cool situation around the building.

The function of exterior is absorping the rain water and treated organically for farm use and chemical submission distribution.  This farm, is very necessary to gives good impact on this location.

This farm can minimize  the problems of food mileage and shortage, and reconnect consumers with producers.

Urban farming is a best plantation for urban developing.

There are 132 floors and 600 vertical meters, and Dragonfly can accommodate 28 different agricultural fields for the production of fruit, vegetables, grains, meat and dairy. The combination of solar energy makes 100%efficiency.

2. Sky-Terra skyscrapers create green urban space in the sky

Designed by San Francisco-based designer Joanna Borek-Clement, the Sky-Terra skyscrapers is a neuron of networking towers. The function of this building is for urban desigm

This structure includes city, apartment, park, and recreational space but it is still consider to the green living.

The ‘Sky-Terra skyscrapers’ was designed by Tokyo because they have won the general competition.

The high of tower is 1600ft, spreading green areas to get time for relaxing and outdoor activity.

Another sustainable element is the transportation system of interconnected foot paths and 4-foot wide streets used for bikes or small electric cars. An elevator used for interconnection between floors.

They find a problem when building this project. The problem is lack of sun, that can be let to the street because of a lot of holes and green spaces.

Then there is the wind and weather factor when you’re up top. But the Sky-Terra buildings were designed for already-clogged cities like Tokyo, and these cities, some green space, direct sunlight, and fresh air are better.

The Sky-Terra towers are indeed a nice concept for urban areas, but don’t you think it will make life really boring for those on the ground level?

3. My Dream, Our Vision by Design Act

 Design Act designed this entry into the World Expo 2010 Singapore Pavilion competition called ‘My Dream, Our Vision’.

Kay Ngee Tan Architects and partners were designed this concept.

The pavilion is made of an illuminated digital cloud hovering over an ever-changing green pasture. They combine two situations between dark and light by giving audio feeds, and catapults for the bright

it is made of 3866 transparant cubes with different size . It gives good imagination that dreams can be reality in our life.

About the proposed Singapore Pavilion

For singapore, basically its about transformation that dream can be a reality.

Here, the emphasis is on human interactions and connections as the city’s driving force, and giving them sustainable life by combining all elements but in high technology.  Its designed likes cloud on the sky  with various dream-like qualities.

It has three levels: a sub-level (basement), a ground-level Plaza, and a mezzanine level inside the Pavilions cloud-crown.

It will contain 8 separate chambers of experience,tell the singapore history: The Tunnel – in a journey through the city’s hidden side  The Dream Maker – collective dream-making Transition through Cloud – and through a sequence of collected dreams

Dream Register – multi-media/sensory interpretation of Singaporean’s dreams

Wishing Tunnel – visitors share their dreams with the world Dream-harvester

Space Warper – disorientates to transit between dream and reality

4. NO Man’s Land : design to scuffle water woes in Dead Sea

Water is the most contentious resources in world.

Thats why we need an architect to answer this question, , how can architects engage in these complex dynamics and decision-making processes?

EcoFactor: No Man’s Land is truly revolutionary. The function of this planned building is to give more drinking water to residents in Dead Sea region. Its launced by New York, based on Phu Hoang company.

No man’s land generate a variety of building technology and will extract water molecules from the air to be desalinated, ending the extinction of fresh water near the Dead Sea. The part of this structure are Salinity gradient solar ponds, water purification tanks, and water filtering processes. The design also provides for tourist and solar energy conservation too.

This is the system on water distribution from roofscape>groundscape> and the extration of water molecules,

Desalinating water in the saltiest water is necessary, so people who live at there can consume mineral water. I personally think that an architectural structure with so much potential should definitely become a reality in the coming years
